EDO STATE SHOULD EMBRACE AGRICULTURE FOR ECONOMIC GROWTH – By N.Efosa
Every now and then, the prices of crude which is Nigeria’s main source of Revenue fluctuates in the international market, this in a multiplier effect view do not enable for planning and projection for Nigeria. It will be better to explore other sources for revenue in addition to crude oil.
In Edo State, the land is blessed for Agriculture, from the Norther part, through the central all the way to the southern part of the state, agricultural produces for local consumption and export can be harnessed profitably.
The Agricultural Revolution started in Great Britain in the early 18th century and spread throughout Europe and America by the 19th century. This was a period of significant agricultural development marked by new farming techniques and inventions that led to a massive increase in food production. The Agricultural Revolution brought about experimentation with new crops and new methods of crop rotation. These new farming techniques gave soil time to replenish nutrients leading to stronger crops and better agricultural output. Advancements in irrigation and drainage further increased productivity.
Today you can walk into your local grocery store and fill your shopping cart with a variety of fresh produce. Then, with no more effort than it takes to push your cart, you can head to the cereal aisle to pick out your favorite boxes of breakfast cereal before ending your shopping trip in the bread aisle, where you grab a couple of loaves of bread for your lunchtime sandwiches. What you probably don’t realize is that these conveniences that you experience today, could not be a reality if it were not for commercial Agricultural activities, these would not happen. Edo State has the potential for Rice Production which is the staple food in Nigeria and Africa, there is the potential for Rubber production, Timber, fish, cocoa, Fruits, Groundnuts, Plantain, Pineapple, Yam, Vegetables, Tomatoes, Cashew etc are other agricultural products found in abundance in various parts of the state. In Edo State, the climate is mixed with wet and dry seasons, thereby making it conducive for agricultural production. All the local government in Etsako, Esan and Owan, are centres of rice production while cocoa and rubber are cultivated in all areas of Esan Owan, Orhionmwon, Akoko-Edo, Ovia and Uhunmwode.
Having known these, it will only be of great benefit to Edo State if Agriculture is embraced, and embraced fast, it should also be modelled around business investments so as to get additional utilities out of it. Edo State under the incoming government should take a look at how advancements in farming techniques and equipment can change the states revenue generation, and above all, how they will impact our environment.
