In what appears to be a political reincarnation of professor Ambrose Alli, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) flagged off her gubernatorial campaigns at Baptist Convention ground along Television Road, Benin City, coincidentally the same location where Ambrose Alli flagged off his gubernatorial campaign under the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) in 1979.

The governor declined the PDP’s request to use the Ogbemudia Stadium. The PDP eventually held the flag off at Baptist Convention grounds. The last time the Baptist Convention ground was used for flag off of a political rally was in 1979 during the United Party of Nigeria (UPN) flag off which produced Professor Ambrose Alli as governor of Bendel State. Ambrose Alli went ahead and won that election by a landslide.

Whether this will be a repeat of history remains to be seen on September 10. According to Hon George Edigin, who dug up this historical fact, he said “The hand of God is in this project. What happened in 1979 will also be repeated in 2016. And the feat achieved by Ambrose Alli will be repeated and surpassed by Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

Senator Markarfi, who was represented at the flag-off by the national secretary of the party, Senator Ben Obi, said the Peoples’ democratic Party have heard the wailing and crying of the Edo people and as such has presented before them a man capable of turning the state around for good.

Various speakers at the rally enjoined Edo and Nigerians to team up with the PDP and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu in the quest to transform Edo state.

Former Chairman, Board of Trustees,Chief Tony Anenih, the Esama of Benin, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chief Tom Ikimi, Prof Jerry Gana, Senator Sam Egwu, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko represented by the Chief of Staff, Kola Ademuyimi, among others were dignitaries at the event. All states controlled by the Peoples’ Democratic Party in Nigeria were represented at the flag-off by their Deputy Governors.

Approximately 45,000 enthusiastic supporters attended the flag off in Benin city, creating a gridlock in major parts of the city. The flag-off signaled the formal commencement of campaigns for the September 10, 2016 governorship election in Edo state. according to the PDP candidate, Pastor Osagi Ize-Iyamu, “We are confident that we will win this election”.

To the PDP governorship candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the massive support from the people is an indication that a real change is desired by the good people of Edo state.
