Unprecedented voter apathy mars Edo LGA polls, as PDP declares a boycott
By Faith IGUODALA Okoro, Benin.
Edo LGA polls scheduled for Saturday March 3 is underway smoothly across Edo State but marred by unprecedented voter apathy.
Even though the state government declared restriction to movement and business but most of the registered voters across Edo State refused to turn out for the election, many citing that it is because their favourite party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) would not be participating in the election.
URHOKPOTA REPORTERS visited several polling units across the three Senatorial Districts of Edo state and the situation was virtually the same with some units having only five voters whose voter cards could not be verified for authenticity as at 10.27am.
The Edo State People’s Democratic Party has gone to court to challenge the validity of the election because they believe that the timeframe was unconstitutional and that the umpires are known card carrying members of the APC which raises the reasonable suspicion of highly probable unfairness.
The court has adjourned hearing until April.
Meanwhile the All Progressives Congress is contesting the election against the All Progressives Congress as there are no opposition but the people of Edo State refused to come out to vote, raising an indication that there may be subtle rejection of the APC in Edo State.
We shall bring you more details as they unfold.
