A male Youth Corper (names withheld) serving with the Edo State House of Assembly was recently given the beating of his life by thugs loyal to the Speaker of Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Victor Edoror, allegedly for receiving court papers from bailifs of the Court of Appeal, Benin.
The Court of Appeal Benin city had announced the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Sylvanus Eruaga, as the winner of the Etsako West II State Constituency seat which was hitherto occupied by an APC member.
Eruaga speaking at a press briefing in Benin City, said he was shocked at the treatment of the Youth Corper who was only doing his official duties but ended up in the critical situation at a private hospital in Benin City for many days.
Mr. Eruaga also accused the state governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, and the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon Victor Edoror, of blocking his constitutional swearing-in as member of the state assembly.
The Court of Appeal had on December 19, declared Mr. Eruaga winner of the election conducted on April 12, 2015, asking Mr. Yakubu Gowon of the APC to vacate the seat immediately. Mr. Yakubu has been appointed an aide to governor Adams Oshiomhole serving the House of Assembly.
Mr. Eruaga said he has fulfilled all the necessary conditions needed to be sworn-in as a lawmaker and has presented himself to the assembly several times, but the assembly unconstitutionally declined to swear him in.
Mr. Eruaga, who displayed his INEC Certificate of Return, the Enrolment of Order and clearance papers from the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) to back his claim that he has fulfilled the conditions stipulated by the Electoral law to be sworn-in, said he has turned to God for succor.
